Festive opening Lidl Merksem

This evening, the Lidl on the Borrewaterstraat in Merskem-Antwerp was opened. This supermarket used to be a C&A branch that Forum Estates NV previously bought, the former Ulvenhout Retail Invest Fund cv, to convert it into a supermarket.

The store is ideally located near the Bredabaan and opposite the district hall. There are also about 70 parking spaces on the roof.

Lidl and Forum Estates invested heavily in converting this store into a modern, attractive and accessible supermarket. Lidl has set up a brand-new supermarket on 1,400 m² according to the latest concept, with an extensive fresh and organic department. Investments were also made in an in-house bakery and butcher’s shop. Lidl is renting a space of 2,000 m² from Ulvenhout Retail Invest Fund for this purpose.

Lidl is a German chain of supermarkets in the discount segment. The company is active in much of Europe, with some 10,000 stores in more than 23 countries. It is one of the fast-growing discounters in Europe and is also expanding rapidly and successfully in Belgium.

Besides the ex-Albert Heijn in Leuven, which was recently converted into a Lidl, the Lidl in the Zeelaan in De Panne, and the brand-new Lidl supermarket on the Rabot in Ghent, Forum Estates now has four operational Lidl stores in its portfolio. In addition, the store in the ‘Montevideo’ project on the Eilandje in Antwerp was recently purchased, where Lidl will open a store in 2021. These stores are all furnished according to the successful ‘new format’ principle, where Lidl, as a premium discounter, also offers various fresh and branded products.

This acquisition fits perfectly with the fund’s innovative investment strategy, which focuses on the acquisition of E-commerce resistant supermarket real estate.
